“You have the same dreams as other people, you have equal if not more talent at times, but you don't have the same opportunities. You don't have the same doors opened to you, the same nepotism, the same money or resources that can be put towards your dreams. And you a lot of times don't have family members that have ever achieved the things that you want to do. When you aspire to do something that is outside of something the world would see you doing — 'To Be Young, Gifted & Black' is all of that. It's to have everything, but then not quite be able to grasp it. And to be able to persevere through that."
I am Sydney Downs, a sophomore in the Duke Ellington School of Arts Theatre program. I am receiving a remarkable education and training by renowned artist educators including those who have taught the late Chadwick Boseman. I am honored to qualify as young, gifted, and black. But it's not enough. Your support is needed. A financial gift from you will insure that I continue to receive a top tier education with master classes, theatrical resources and opportunities that are necessary for me to have a seat at the table and to create my own.
You are apart of my journey. Be a witness. Take part. Give. Thank you.
